How to trim an MP3 at the exact spot
The waveform shows where the speech, music and silence are, so you can spot the start of a sentence at a glance. Drag the start and end handles, or click the waveform to bring the nearest handle there. To land on the millisecond, zoom in: the waveform redraws with more detail and the ruler below shows the seconds.
If you already know the times, type them in the start and end fields as m:ss.mmm, like 1:23.500. The handles also work from the keyboard, which helps when a mouse or trackpad is not precise enough.
- Left and right arrows: move the handle by 0.1 second.
- Shift + arrows: move it by 1 second.
- Home and End: jump to the start or end of the audio.
- Play selection: plays exactly what you will download, fades included.
Keep the section or remove a part from the middle?
In keep mode, the final file is just the selection: use it for an intro sting, a chorus, a sermon excerpt or a ringtone. In remove mode, the selection goes away and the rest of the audio is joined back together. It is the quick way to delete a cough, a flubbed line or a long silence at the start of a recording.
At the join we apply a tiny fade on both sides so there is no click. In this mode, the play button plays a few seconds before and after the cut so you can check the transition. The fade in and fade out you set apply to the start and end of the final file.

Using the cut audio in Premiere, DaVinci, CapCut and on social
The file is ready for any editor. In Premiere Pro, drag the MP3 or WAV into the Project panel and then onto the timeline. In DaVinci Resolve, import it into the Media Pool; in Final Cut Pro, use File, Import, Media. In CapCut, import the file and place it on the audio track under your video.
Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts do not publish an audio file on its own: you pair the sound with a video or an image in an editor and post the video. For editing, pick WAV, which loses nothing between exports. To send it in a chat or publish a podcast, MP3 is lighter.

Which files can I cut?
Audio in MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and FLAC, and also MP4, MOV and WebM video: in that case we cut the soundtrack and you download the audio only. Some MKV, AVI and less common codecs do not open in every browser. If you get an error, try another browser or convert the video to MP4 first.
The clip keeps the original sample rate, in mono if the original is mono and in stereo otherwise. Long files, like a full church service, work too: the waveform loads with a percentage, and you can cancel at any time. If your goal is to find the right lines in an hour of audio, reading a transcript can be faster than hunting on the waveform.

How do I cut an audio file for free?

Can I cut the audio from a video?
Yes. Choose an MP4, MOV or WebM video and the waveform of its soundtrack appears right away. You mark the section and download only the audio, as MP3 or WAV. For the audio of the whole video without cutting, use the video to MP3 converter.
How do I remove a section from the middle of an audio file?
Select the part you want gone and choose remove the selection. The rest of the audio is joined with a tiny fade so it does not click. Before downloading, the Play the join button plays a few seconds on each side of the cut so you can check it.
Does cutting audio reduce quality?
Not as WAV: the clip is written uncompressed, at 16 bits. As MP3, the audio is compressed again at 192 kbps, a solid bitrate for voice and music. If the file is headed for editing or mixing, choose WAV; for listening and sharing, MP3 is enough.
How do I add a fade in and fade out?
Type the length in milliseconds in the fade in and fade out fields before cutting. The fade in applies to the start of the final file and the fade out to its end. Between 200 and 500 ms sounds natural; for music that stops abruptly, try 2000 ms.
Can I cut at the exact millisecond?
Yes. Type the time as m:ss.mmm, like 0:12.350, or zoom into the waveform and nudge the handle with the arrow keys, 0.1 second at a time. The ruler under the waveform shows the scale and the time field follows the handle as it moves.
Is there a watermark or a usage limit?
No watermark, no sign-up and no usage cap. Cut as many files as you like and download each clip as many times as you need. Long recordings, one or two hours, work too.
