Rotate video online 90°, 180° or mirrored, with a preview.
To rotate a video, choose the file, click 90° right, 180° or 90° left and check the preview. For MP4 and MOV, we write the rotation into the file itself without re-encoding: it is instant and keeps the original quality. You can also mirror the picture. Free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Free, no sign-upThis video's preview does not open in this browser, but the rotation works all the same.
Fixes front camera videos with backwards text. Mirroring requires re-encoding the video.
For editors and TVs that ignore the rotation flag. It re-encodes the video, so it takes longer.
This is an HDR video. When re-encoding, colors may shift and the result may no longer be HDR.

Why is my phone video sideways?
A phone's camera sensor always records in the same position. When you film holding the phone upright, it does not turn the frames: it records the video lying on its side and writes a rotation flag into the file that says how it should be shown. Your gallery, browsers and social networks read that flag and display the video upright.
A video shows up sideways in two cases. In the first, the app or device opening the file ignores the flag, which happens with some editors, older TVs and converters. In the second, the flag was wrong from the start: the phone was lying flat on a table or turned after you hit record, and it kept the orientation of the first moment. Either way, rotating the video fixes it.
How to rotate a video without losing quality
MP4 and MOV have a field of their own for rotation. When you rotate a video in these formats by 90° or 180°, we do not need to touch the frames: we copy the picture as it is and only change that flag. That is why the rotation is instant, even for long or 4K videos, and the quality stays identical to the original. MKV with H.264, HEVC or AV1 comes out as MP4 so it can carry the flag.
Phone galleries, browsers, QuickTime, VLC and social networks honor this flag. Some editors, older TVs and media players ignore it, and the video stays sideways there. For those cases, tick burn the rotation into the picture: we re-encode the video already turned, and it shows up right everywhere.
| Situation | How we rotate | Time |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 or MOV, rotation only | Flag in the file, no re-encoding | Seconds |
| MKV with H.264, HEVC or AV1, rotation only | Comes out as MP4 with the flag | Seconds |
| Mirror | Re-encodes the video | Depends on the length |
| WebM | Re-encodes the video | Depends on the length |
| Burn the rotation into the picture | Re-encodes the video | Depends on the length |
How to flip a video and when you need to
Mirroring flips the picture horizontally, like a mirror: what was on the left moves to the right. It fixes front camera videos with backwards text, lines up a speaker's gaze with the side of the screen, or matches another shot in your edit. To turn an upside down video right side up, use 180°, which does not swap the sides.
Players do not honor a mirror flag as reliably, so mirroring always re-encodes the video. We keep the same codec when we can: H.264 stays H.264, HEVC stays HEVC when it can be encoded (otherwise it becomes H.264) and VP9 stays VP9. The bitrate stays high, close to or above the original, the audio is not changed at all and the timing of every frame is kept. The button shows the progress and the time left.
How to rotate a video in CapCut and Premiere Pro
In CapCut, select the clip on the timeline, tap Edit and then Rotate until it sits right; to mirror, use Mirror in the same menu. In Premiere Pro, open Effect Controls, set Rotation under Motion to 90 or 180 and, if the picture gets cropped, change the sequence size. Either way, the video is exported again, which re-encodes the picture and takes longer with big files.

Frequently asked questions
How do I fix a sideways video?
Choose the video on this page, tap 90° right or 90° left until the preview stands upright and click rotate video. For MP4 and MOV, the file is ready instantly, with no re-encoding. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Does rotating a video lose quality?
Rotating alone, in MP4 and MOV, loses nothing: the picture is copied as it is and only the rotation flag changes. Mirroring, rotating a WebM or burning the rotation into the picture re-encodes the video, at a high bitrate so the difference does not show.
Why does my rotated video still look sideways in my editor?
Because that editor ignores the file's rotation flag. Rotate it again with burn the rotation into the picture ticked: we re-encode the video already in the right position, and it shows upright in any program.
How do I flip a video horizontally?
Tick mirror and check the preview: the picture is flipped horizontally, like a mirror. You can mirror and rotate at the same time. Mirroring always re-encodes the video, so it takes longer than rotating alone, and the button shows the progress.
Can I rotate an iPhone video?
Yes. iPhone videos are MOV files, usually in HEVC, and the rotated video stays a MOV, with no re-encoding and the new flag. If the preview does not open on your device, the rotation still works in the downloaded file.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Pick the video from your gallery, tap the rotation and download. Rotating an MP4 or MOV is quick on any device; mirroring and re-encoding long videos is more comfortable on a computer.
