Video color palette the colors that rule the picture, in HEX and RGB.

To get the color palette of a video, load the file and pick the whole video, a stretch or the frame on screen. We read the frames and show the dominant colors with HEX, RGB, HSL and how much of the picture each one covers, ready to copy or download.

Letterbox bars, fades and white screens do not crowd out the colors of the scene.

How to use it

How to extract a color palette from a video

  1. 01

    Load the video

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. The preview opens right away, so you can pick the stretch or the frame that matters.

  2. 02

Pick where the colors come from

The whole video, a stretch with a start and an end, or just the frame on screen. Choose 5 to 10 colors and whether near-pure black and white count.

  3. 03

    Copy or download

Click the HEX, RGB or HSL value to copy it. Download the palette as PNG, the CSS variables, the JSON, the .ase swatches and the frame strip.

How do I find the colors of a video?

A single color does not say much; the look comes from the set and from how much each color weighs. So we read frames spread evenly across the video or the chosen stretch (two per second, from 12 to 240 frames), group similar tones and show the colors that remain, from the one that covers the most of the picture to the one that covers the least. The percentage is the picture area added up across every frame read.

Letterbox bars, fades, credits and white screens can swallow a palette. With the option to leave out near-pure black and white turned on, they do not enter the percentages, and we tell you how much of the picture was left out. Dark tones that carry color, like navy or burgundy, stay in. The values come from the picture as it shows on screen, in sRGB, the standard for the web and design apps.

What is a video color palette used for?

For editors, the palette is a quick reference: compare the color of two scenes that need to match, check that a grade kept the mood, and show a client the visual direction before touching everything. For designers, it is the starting point for the thumbnail, promo art and titles, using the colors already in the video.

  • Thumbnails and covers in the same colors as the video, no eyedropper.
  • A color grading reference across cameras or shoot days.
  • Brand colors of a church, company or channel checked in every video.
  • A mood board from a film or music video you love.

What is a movie barcode?

It is the whole video in a single image: every frame read becomes one column, from the start on the left to the end on the right, with the average color of each height of the frame. Scenes, day-to-night turns, stretches with a different grade and the rhythm of the edit all show up, which the palette alone cannot show.

The strip has as many columns as frames read, stretched to at least 1200 pixels wide without blending one column into the next. For a stretch, it shows only that stretch. A single frame has no strip, because there is no time to show.

Which format should I download the palette in?

Each format suits a different job. The HEX, RGB and HSL values copy with one click and paste into any app. The files carry the whole palette at once, in order of importance and with each color's share.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the colors of one specific frame?

Choose This frame, pause the preview where you want and click Extract the palette. The colors come from that frame only, with each one's share.

How many colors should I extract?

Six colors usually sum up a video well. For a quick thumbnail reference, five are enough; for a color study, use ten. If the video has fewer distinct colors, the palette shows only those, without repeating near-identical tones.

Why is black missing from my palette?

The option to leave out near-pure black and white is on. It takes letterbox bars, fades and white screens out of the percentages. Turn it off and the palette updates right away, without reading the video again.

Can I import the palette into Photoshop or Illustrator?

Yes. Download the .ase swatches and import them in the Swatches panel of Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign. Each color comes in named after its HEX code.

What does each color's percentage measure?

Picture area. We add up every frame read and count how much of the screen each color covers. With black and white left out, the percentages count only the rest.

Does it work with long videos?

Yes. We read at most 240 frames spread evenly, so a full film fits too; it just takes a bit longer to read. To study a single scene, use A stretch with its start and end.
