What the SRT from this generator looks like

An SRT file is plain text. Each caption has a number, an in and out time written as hours:minutes:seconds, milliseconds, and the text shown on screen, with a blank line between one caption and the next. The generator builds that file from the transcript, and because every word carries its own time, captions come in and go out with the speech, with no drift piling up by the end of the video.

When you download, pick the TV, Netflix or YouTube preset to match where it's going, plus your project's frame rate. The text is editable: if a name came out wrong, fix it in the transcript and the fix carries to the SRT and to your clip captions.

How to use the SRT in YouTube, Premiere, DaVinci and Final Cut

One file works almost everywhere. In YouTube Studio, open the video, go to Subtitles, add the language and upload the file with the option that keeps its timing. In Premiere Pro, import the .srt into the project and drag it onto the sequence. In DaVinci Resolve, use File, Import, Subtitle. In Final Cut Pro, use File, Import, Captions. Our SRT to Premiere, DaVinci and Final Cut tools cover each editor in detail.

On Instagram and TikTok, captions on Reels and short videos have to be part of the picture, because those apps don't take SRT files. That's where clips come in: we make the vertical video with animated captions already burned into the MP4. If your player wants VTT, the subtitle converter switches formats without touching the timing.

SRT captions or animated captions: which one do you need?

An SRT is a separate file: the player or editor shows the captions on top of the video, and viewers can turn them on or off. It's the right format for YouTube, course platforms and any project you still plan to edit. It works with video and with audio, because it only depends on the speech.

Animated captions are burned into the picture: they light up word by word, in time with the speech, and show on every platform, even with the sound off. On video clips you choose from 235 styles and 54 fonts and download an MP4 ready for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Need another language? Caption translation, in 9 languages, is on Studio and Agency.

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate an SRT file for free?

Pick your video or audio on this page, create a free account and upload the file. We transcribe the speech with a timestamp on every word and you download the .srt. The trial lasts 3 days or 1 hour of media, and it starts with a card on file. Cancel in the app before it ends and you pay nothing.

Does the SRT generator work with audio only?

Yes. Captions come from the speech, not the picture, so an MP3 or WAV gives you the same SRT as the video. That's useful when a recorder or mixer caught cleaner sound than the camera: the text is more accurate and the timing still matches, as long as the audio and video start together.

Can I edit the captions before downloading?

Yes. Fix any word right in the transcript and the fix goes into the SRT, your clip captions and every other export. Names, acronyms and technical terms are the usual suspects, so a quick review before downloading pays off. Changed your mind? You can restore the original text.

Which languages does the caption generator support?

90+ languages, with the spoken language detected automatically. Captions come out in the language that was spoken. To get the same captions in another language, Studio and Agency translate them into 9 languages with the same timing, and the translation downloads as SRT too.

Can I use an SRT on Instagram or TikTok?

Not directly: on those apps, captions for Reels and short videos need to be in the picture. For that, use clips: we make the vertical video with animated captions burned in, in 235 styles, and you download an MP4 ready to post. Keep the SRT for YouTube and video editors.

What's the difference between SRT and VTT?

Both store the text and timing of each caption. SRT separates milliseconds with a comma and is what video editors accept most. VTT uses a period, starts with a WEBVTT line and shows up more in website players. If you need VTT, our free subtitle converter switches formats without changing the timing.

Do the captions have a watermark?

The SRT file never has a watermark: it's only text and timing. On clips with animated captions, the FilmScribe mark appears at the end during the trial and goes away on paid plans, from Pro to Agency.
