From tape to story: one 52-minute interview
A reporter at a local paper records 52 minutes with Earl, who has run the same diner for 40 years through a plant closing and two recessions. The audio comes off her phone as an M4A. Back at the newsroom she uploads it and starts the range at minute 1, after the small talk about where to sit.
Within minutes the transcript is ready, with both voices separated. On Studio she names the speakers “Interviewer” and “Earl”. Chapters lay out his childhood, buying the diner, the plant closing, the lean years and who takes over next. She knows where every topic lives without replaying the tape.
She searches “griddle” and lands on 12:09, the line that will open her story. She clicks it, listens to check his tone and marks it as a favorite along with five other answers. Lines tagged with nostalgia and pride show up in the emotions view, and that is where the heart of the piece is.
At deadline she exports a PDF with speakers and timecodes and sends it to her editor, who checks every quote without asking for the audio. The 20-second griddle moment goes out as an MP3 for the paper's weekly podcast. Had she shot video, the same favorites would have become a cut timeline in Premiere Pro.
For a grad student running 12 semi-structured interviews, the path is the same and only the destination changes. One project for the study, one file per participant and a TXT of each interview to paste into the appendix and code in whatever qualitative analysis software she already uses. Before exporting, she replaces real names with participant IDs right in the text.

Frequently asked questions
Does it label interviewer and interviewee?
Yes. Lines come out split by speaker, each with its own timestamp. On Studio and Agency, you can rename speakers or let us identify each one by name, so your export reads with the interviewer's and guest's names instead of numbers.
What formats can I export the interview transcript in?
TXT, PDF and SRT, plus MP3 snippets. PDF comes straight from the transcript, with speakers and timecodes. To edit in Word or Google Docs, open the TXT: the text arrives clean and ready to format. What languages does interview transcription support?
90+ languages, with the language detected for you. An interview in Spanish or Portuguese is transcribed in the language spoken. On Studio and Agency, captions can also be translated into 9 languages, which helps with documentaries that feature people from other countries.
Can I pull selects into Premiere Pro?
Yes, on Studio, Agency and the trial. Mark your favorite answers or build a script and export a cut timeline for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve (.xml) or Final Cut Pro (.fcpxml). If you shot multicam or recorded separate audio, upload your project's .xml or .fcpxml and we cut on top of your own timeline.
Does it work with phone recordings, Zoom calls and YouTube links?
It does. We accept MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, WEBM, MP4, MOV, AVI and MKV, plus YouTube links. Zoom, Meet and Teams recordings go in like any other file, with no bot joining the call. Cleaner audio means a cleaner transcript: heavy noise and crosstalk need more review.
How do I protect participants' identities?
You can edit the transcript and replace names with participant IDs before exporting. With an active subscription, a file stays in your account until it goes 45 days without being opened, and we email you before removing it. If your study is under IRB review, download the exports you need and follow the storage protocol approved for your project.
How much does interview transcription cost?
