What an OGG or OPUS file is

OGG is the name of an audio container, and what goes inside it is the codec. Today it is almost always Opus, built for voice over slow connections: it sounds good with very little data. That is why the same kind of audio shows up with three extensions, .ogg, .opus and .oga, all from the same family.

Older OGG files from games and Linux programs usually carry a different codec, Vorbis. For transcription none of this changes anything: all three formats go in as they are.

ExtensionWhat's usually insideWhere it comes from
.opusOpusVoice messages saved on Android
.oggOpus or VorbisWhatsApp Web, Telegram, games, Linux
.ogaOpus or VorbisSome recorders and players

Where OGG and OPUS audio comes from

Most of it is voice messages. On Android, WhatsApp keeps voice notes as .opus files in a folder of their own, and it hands you .ogg when you download from WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. Telegram also records voice messages as OGG with Opus. Some Android recording apps save in the same format.

The step-by-step for saving a voice note on iPhone, Android and desktop is in our guide on how to transcribe WhatsApp audio. This page is about the file once it is saved: what changes, what doesn't and how much of the trial it uses.

  • A client's or supplier's voice note that needs a written record
  • A long message from a relative to keep or print
  • A testimony sent as audio for research or reporting
  • A voice note with an address, amounts or instructions

Why not convert OPUS to MP3 first

Many people convert WhatsApp audio to MP3 because another service would not take OGG. You don't need to here, and converting even hurts a little: the audio was already compressed once and loses a bit more the second time.

Another common surprise: a voice message has a low bitrate, around 16 to 32 kbps in mono, so a minute takes a few hundred kilobytes. Converted to MP3, the same minute gets several times bigger without a single extra word. For transcription, the small original file is the best you have.

1 minute of speechApproximate size
Voice message OPUS, 16 to 32 kbps0.1 to 0.25 MB
Same audio as a 128 kbps MP3about 1 MB
Same audio as WAVabout 5 to 11 MB

What makes a voice message harder to transcribe

Voice messages get recorded while walking, driving or with the TV on. Wind on the mic, a phone held far from the mouth and someone talking in the background cause most errors. Names, phone numbers and amounts also need a look: check them by clicking the sentence, and the player jumps to that passage.

Each file counts by its length. Thirty one-minute voice notes add up to half an hour of your 1 hour. The trial lasts 3 days or until the hour runs out, whichever comes first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert OGG to text?

Pick the .ogg file on this page, create a free account and upload the same file. We transcribe it with a timestamp on every passage, and you download TXT, PDF or SRT. The trial covers 3 days or 1 hour of audio.

What's the difference between OGG and OPUS?

OGG is the container; Opus is the codec inside it. An .opus file is, in practice, an OGG with Opus audio under another extension. Both, and .oga too, go in as they are.

Do I need to convert OPUS to MP3 before transcribing?

No. Converting does not improve the text, makes the file bigger and compresses the audio one more time. Upload the original file.

Can I transcribe several OGG files from one chat?

Yes. Upload each file, and each one becomes a transcript with timestamps. If you exported a whole WhatsApp chat, unzip it first and upload the audio files.

Does a 30-second voice note use up the whole trial?

No. Only the audio length counts: 30 seconds use 30 seconds of your 1 hour.

What language will the text be in?

The language spoken in the audio, detected for you among 90+ languages. You don't need to pick anything before uploading.

Your OGG as text, as it is. No converting to MP3.

Upload the OGG or OPUS as it came out of the app. We transcribe it with a timestamp on every passage, and you download TXT, PDF or SRT.
