How to save WhatsApp audio on Android, iPhone and desktop
WhatsApp keeps a voice message inside the chat, so the first step is getting the file out. The exact path depends on your device and app version, but the idea never changes: share or download the message. Save the original file. Re-recording it with another phone held to the speaker adds room noise and makes the text worse.
On Android, voice notes also live in the phone's storage, in the WhatsApp media folder under "WhatsApp Voice Notes", split into one subfolder per week. A view-once voice message cannot be forwarded, saved or exported: if it matters, ask the sender to send it again as a regular voice note.
| Where the audio is | How to save it | File you get |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Press and hold, Share | .opus |
| iPhone | Press and hold, Forward, Share, Save to Files | .opus |
| WhatsApp Web | Message menu, Download | .ogg |
| Desktop app | Message menu, Download | .ogg or .opus |
| Exported chat | Export chat, Attach media | ZIP with the .opus files |
How to transcribe many WhatsApp voice notes from one chat
When there are dozens of voice notes, saving them one at a time gets old fast. Export the chat with media instead: on iPhone, tap the contact name, then Export Chat; on Android, open the three-dot menu, More, Export chat. WhatsApp builds a ZIP with the chat text and the audio files. Unzip it first, because what you upload is the audio, not the ZIP.
Each file name carries the date it was sent, like PTT-20261002-WA0003.opus on Android, so sorting the folder by name puts the conversation in order. From there, choose how to transcribe:
- One by one: every voice note gets its own text and timestamps, on any plan.
- Many at once: on Agency, up to 20 audio files in one upload, each with its own transcript or all merged into one, with the file name where each one starts.
- Join first: the free audio joiner glues the files into one MP3 that you upload like any other recording.
Doesn't WhatsApp already transcribe voice messages?
It does, within limits. On phones, WhatsApp has voice message transcripts: you turn them on in Settings, Chats, Voice message transcripts, pick a language, then press and hold each voice note to see the text. For reading a quick message on the bus, that works well, and you should use it.
The limits show up when the audio needs to become a document. The language list is short and depends on your phone and system, the feature is not on WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, and the text stays inside the chat, one message at a time, with no timestamps and no export. When you need to keep, quote, search or send the text to someone, save the file and transcribe it here.
Noise, accents or several voices: what to expect
Voice notes get recorded while walking down the street, driving or holding the phone far from the mouth. We transcribe what can be heard, and the result follows the sound: wind, traffic and loud music cause more errors. Accents matter less than noise. Review the noisy parts more carefully, clicking a sentence to hear that moment.
When the audio is a recorded call or a group conversation, lines arrive separated by speaker, each with its own time. Where two voices overlap, check by listening. Phone numbers, amounts, addresses and names are where one wrong word changes the meaning, so read those parts with the audio playing.

Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a WhatsApp voice note into text?
Save the voice message: on a phone, through Share; on WhatsApp Web, through the Download menu. Pick the file on this page, create a free account and upload the same file. We send back the text word by word, with timestamps, ready to copy or download as TXT, PDF or SRT.
Do I need to convert the .opus file to MP3 first?
No. OPUS and OGG, the formats WhatsApp uses, go in as they are. Converting first does not improve the text. If you only want to play the audio on a device that won't open .opus, the free WhatsApp audio to MP3 tool handles that separately.
Can I transcribe WhatsApp audio on an iPhone?
Yes. Press and hold the voice note, tap Forward, then the Share icon and Save to Files. Then open this page on the iPhone, pick the file from the Files app and continue to your account.
Why can't I save a WhatsApp voice note?
Most often it is a view-once voice message, which WhatsApp does not let you forward, save or export. It can also be a voice note that was never downloaded to the phone: tap play once to download it and try again.
Can I transcribe every voice note in a chat?
Yes. Export the chat with media, unzip it and upload the audio files. Each one becomes text with timestamps. On Agency, up to 20 files go in one upload and can become a single transcript, with the file name where each voice note starts.
Does a WhatsApp transcript count as legal evidence?
A transcript helps you organize what was said and find the right moment, but it does not replace what a court may require, such as a notarized record. If the audio is going to court, talk to your lawyer first and keep the original file.
How much does it cost?
The trial covers 3 days or 1 hour of audio, with a card on file. Voice notes are short, so many fit in that hour. If you don't cancel, the plan you picked starts, from R$ 59 (BRL) a month with 10 hours.
