How to make clips from a long video
- 01
Paste a link or pick the video
Use a YouTube video or live stream link, or a video file from your computer. We show the video thumbnail, or the file's name and length.
- 02
Create an account and upload
Create your account, start the trial and upload. While uploading, pick your preferred clip length and, if you like, describe what makes a good clip in that video.
- 03
Adjust and download
Open the suggested clips, adjust the start and end through the transcript, choose 9:16, captions and the camera on the speaker, and download the MP4.
How the clip maker picks clips
We read the transcript of the whole video and look for parts that make sense on their own, without needing the rest. Each clip comes with a title, a hook, the reason it was picked, an impact score from 0 to 100 and a type: Hook, Insight, Story, Proof, Opinion, Emotion, Teaching, Call to action or Humor. Longer videos give more clips, up to 60 per file, and only the ones that pass our quality filter make it in.
When uploading, you pick a preferred length, from Automatic to under 30 seconds, 30 to 59, 60 to 89 or 90 to 180, and you can write up to 600 characters on what makes a good clip in that video. Both only apply at upload, so think about them before processing. After that, any clip can be adjusted word by word, and you can make your own clips from any part.
Vertical video with captions and the camera on the speaker
Clips come out in the shape of where they're going: 9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, 1:1 or 4:5 for the feed, 16:9 or the original for YouTube. In the narrow formats, motion tracking, still in beta, keeps the camera on whoever is speaking, in an interview or with one person walking across a stage. You can switch between people with hard cuts, split the screen when both are on camera and, if the camera follows the wrong person, mark on the picture who it should follow.
The editor preview shows a fixed crop; the camera following and the split screen show up in the final video. Captions are burned into the MP4 and light up word by word with the speech, in 235 styles, 54 fonts and 48 ready-made templates. Whatever you fix in the transcript comes out right in the captions.
| Format | Where to use it |
|---|---|
| 9:16 | Reels, Shorts, TikTok |
| 4:5 | Instagram feed |
| 1:1 | Square feed |
| 16:9 or original | YouTube and websites |
Clips from sermons, podcasts, lectures and interviews
When uploading, you tell us the content type, from 20 ready-made ones plus a custom option, and we adjust what we look for. In a sermon, the strong part is often the illustration or the application line; in a podcast, the opinion that starts a conversation; in a lecture, the explanation that clears up a doubt; in an interview, the personal story.
The most common route is the live stream: the church streams the service, the podcast records live, the school publishes the lecture. Paste the live link; if the replay isn't out yet, the file waits and we try again on our own every 90 minutes, for about 18 hours. An uploaded file comes out at the resolution it was recorded in, up to 4K.
- Sermons and services: clips for Reels and the week's stories.
- Podcasts and video podcasts: one episode becomes dozens of scored clips.
- Lectures and talks: explanations become short promo clips.
- Interviews and testimonials: stories come out captioned with the camera on the speaker.
What's included in the free trial
The trial lasts 3 days or 1 hour of video, whichever ends first, and needs a card. Cancel before it ends and you aren't charged; if you don't cancel, the plan you picked starts on its own. On the trial you see the suggested clips and download a limited number of clip videos, each ending with a short FilmScribe outro; paid plans drop the outro.
Other trial limits: one upload at a time, clips up to 15 minutes, and a video longer than the included hour processed up to that hour. Clips need video: an audio-only file gets a transcript, chapters and emotions, but no clips.
- Suggested clips with a score, type and reason.
- Vertical with animated captions and the camera on the speaker.
- A transcript and chapters of the whole video.
More than a clip maker. Captions, format and camera in one place.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make video clips automatically?
Paste a YouTube link or pick the video on this page, create your account, start the trial and upload. We read the whole speech and suggest clips with a score from 0 to 100. You adjust whatever you like, pick 9:16, captions and the camera on the speaker, and download the MP4.
How many clips come out of one video?
It depends on the length: the longer the video, the more clips, up to 60 per file. Only clips that pass our quality filter make it in, so a video with little speech or a lot of repetition gives fewer. Besides the suggestions, you can make as many manual clips as you want from the transcript.
Do the clips come with captions?
Yes, if you want them. Captions are burned into the video and light up word by word, in 235 styles and 54 fonts, and whatever you fix in the transcript carries to the captions. You can also download a clip without captions or take the SRT into your editor.
Does the camera follow whoever is speaking?
Yes, in 9:16, 1:1 and 4:5, with motion tracking, which is in beta. It works in interviews and with one person who moves around. The preview shows a fixed crop; the final video has the camera following. If it picks the wrong person, use Change focus and mark who to follow.
Can I make clips from a YouTube live stream?
Yes, once the replay is available. Paste the link even if the stream just ended: the file waits for the replay and we try again on our own every 90 minutes, for about 18 hours. To save hours, mark only the part of the stream you care about before processing.
Do the clips have a watermark?
On the trial, each clip video ends with a short FilmScribe outro. On paid plans there's no mark at all. There's never a logo over the picture: the outro only comes at the end.
Can I change the clip length after uploading?
The preferred length and instructions only apply at upload, and each file gets one round of suggested clips. After that, you can adjust the start and end of any clip word by word, remove pauses and filler words, and make manual clips of any length you like.
