How to use it

How to summarize a video

  1. 01

Paste a link or pick a file

Use a YouTube video link or a video or audio file from your computer. We show the video thumbnail, or the file's name and length.

  2. 02

    Create an account and upload

Create your account, start the trial and upload the same link or file. If only part of it matters, set a start and end before processing.

  3. 03

    Read the summary

Open the file: the Overview page has the synopsis and the first chapters, and the Chapters page shows them all, with summaries, key topics and timestamps.

What a video summary from us includes

When you open the file, the first page is the Overview. It shows a synopsis of the whole content, the detected language, the length, the word and speaker counts, and the first six chapters with a play button. The synopsis comes from the full transcript, not a sample, so the end of the video weighs as much as the beginning.

Chapters split the video by topic, not by fixed time. Each has a title, a two or three sentence summary, the key topics, up to three emotions and its length. The number follows the length: usually three to five for a video under ten minutes and up to twenty for longer ones.

  1. Why plan the lesson before recording 0:00
  2. The three most common beginner mistakes 6:40
  3. Worked example: a 10-minute outline 18:15
  4. Questions from students 31:02

How to summarize a lecture, meeting, podcast or sermon

Each kind of recording puts the same summary to a different use. When you upload, you pick the content type, from 20 ready-made ones plus a custom option, and we adjust what we look for: a strong moment in a sermon isn't the same as one in a meeting.

Because everything is timestamped, the summary also works as a map: you read a chapter, click it and hear exactly that part, without watching the video again.

  • Lecture or talk: the synopsis becomes study notes and the chapters become your review outline.
  • Meeting or call: chapters show where each subject came up and who spoke.
  • Podcast or interview: the synopsis helps with the episode description and the chapters go into the YouTube description.
  • Sermon or Bible study: the summary goes to the church group and each chapter can become a clip.

Summary, chapters or transcript: which one to use when

All three come from the same upload and complement each other. The synopsis answers what the video is about. Chapters answer where each topic is. The transcript answers what exactly was said, word for word, and downloads as TXT, PDF or SRT.

When you need to quote a line exactly, go to the transcript: a summary condenses, and a condensed idea never replaces the original words. To decide whether a two-hour video is worth watching, the synopsis and chapter list are enough.

What's included in the free trial

The trial lasts 3 days or 1 hour of video or audio, whichever ends first, and needs a card. Cancel before it ends and you aren't charged; if you don't cancel, the plan you picked starts on its own. The synopsis, chapters and transcript are on every plan and on the trial.

A video longer than the trial hour is processed up to that hour, and the summary covers that part. To summarize only the part that matters in a long recording, set a start and end before processing: only that range counts toward your hours.

  • A synopsis plus chapters with summaries and key topics.
  • The full transcript as TXT, PDF or SRT.
  • A chapter list in the YouTube description format.

Frequently asked questions

How do I summarize a YouTube video?

Paste the link on this page, create your account, start the trial and paste the same link in the upload area. We transcribe the video and give you the synopsis, chapters with summaries and key topics, and the full text. The trial lasts 3 days or 1 hour of media and needs a card.

Can I summarize a video longer than an hour?

Yes. On the plans, what counts is your monthly hours of media, and a long video gets more chapters, up to twenty. On the trial, which has 1 hour, a longer video is processed up to that hour and the rest is kept for after you subscribe. If only one part matters, set a start and end before processing.

Does the summarizer work with audio only?

Yes. The synopsis, chapters and transcript come from the speech, so a podcast MP3, a lecture recorded on a phone or a meeting recording gives you the same summary as a video. The difference is that audio has no video clips; instead, Studio and Agency mark the hooks and best moments.

How many chapters does a summary have?

It depends on the length and how many subjects the video covers: usually three to five for a video under ten minutes, and up to twenty for longer ones. The split is by topic, so a conversation that stays on one subject gets fewer chapters than a lecture with many topics.

Can I paste the chapters into a YouTube description?

Yes. On the Chapters page, Export timestamps copies the list in the format YouTube reads, with each chapter's time and title. Before publishing, check that the first time is 0:00, which YouTube requires; our chapter generator explains the other rules.

Which languages does the summarizer support?

The video can be in any of 90+ languages, with the language detected for you. On Studio and Agency, the summary, chapters and transcript can also be translated into 9 languages, which helps when a lecture or interview was recorded in one language and the audience reads another.
