How to remove sound from a video without losing quality
A video file is a container with separate tracks: one for the picture and one or more for audio. Muting a video does not require touching the picture at all; you only need a new container with the video track alone. That is what we do. The frames are copied exactly as they are, without decoding or compressing them again, so the resolution, frame rate, colors and sharpness match the original.
Because nothing is re-encoded, it takes seconds even for long or 4K videos, and the file shrinks by exactly the size of the audio. With 128 kbps AAC audio, that is close to 1 MB less per minute. The output keeps the input format, with one exception: MKV with H.264, HEVC or AV1 comes out as MP4, which opens in more places.
| Input video | Comes out as | Note |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 or M4V | MP4 | Same format |
| MOV (iPhone, camera) | MOV | Same format, H.264 or HEVC |
| WebM | WebM | Same format |
| MKV with H.264, HEVC or AV1 | MP4 | Opens on more phones and editors |
| MKV with VP8 or VP9 | WebM | The natural home of these codecs |
Why remove the audio instead of muting it in your editor?
In CapCut, Premiere Pro or your phone's editor, you can mute a clip on the timeline. But to get a silent file you have to export, and exporting re-encodes the whole video: it takes longer the bigger the video is, and it loses a little quality every time. When all you need is a file without sound, copying the picture does it in seconds.
There is also a difference between muted and silent. Turning the volume down to zero leaves an empty audio track inside the file; removing the audio takes the track out for good. The file is smaller, carries nothing of the original sound, and when it lands in your editor it does not bring an empty track that gets in the way of the new soundtrack.
- Replace the soundtrack: drop the original music and add another one, or a voiceover.
- Post without third-party music: platforms may mute or block videos with copyrighted songs.
- B-roll for your edit, with no background noise or behind-the-scenes chatter.
- Send a clip without what was said behind the camera.
What if I only want to remove part of the audio?
This tool removes all the audio in the file, from start to finish. To silence just one moment, like a swear word or a loud noise, use an editor: cut the audio at that point or turn the volume down only there. If the video is long and you only need part of it, cut the clip first with the video cutter, which can also remove the audio in the same step.
To add a different sound afterwards, import the muted video into your editor and drag the new track onto the timeline. Since the picture was not re-encoded, your editor gets the same quality as the original file. And if you want the opposite, keeping only the sound, the extract audio tool gives you an MP3 or a WAV.
More than removing sound. The best moments of your video, already captioned.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove the audio from a video online for free?
Choose the video on this page and click remove audio. In a few seconds the silent file is ready to preview and download, in the same format as the original. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no usage limit.
Does removing the audio reduce video quality?
No. The picture track is copied exactly as it was, without decoding or compressing it again. Resolution, frame rate, colors and sharpness stay the same as the original. Only the audio tracks leave the file.
Does it work with iPhone videos?
Yes. The iPhone records MOV files, usually in HEVC, and the muted video stays a MOV with the same picture and the same orientation. If the preview does not open on your device, the downloaded file still comes out right.
Is the file smaller without the audio?
Yes, by exactly the space the audio took. With 128 kbps audio, that is close to 1 MB per minute. The report shows the size before and after. To make it much smaller, compress the video instead.
Can I remove the audio from just part of the video?
This tool removes the audio from the whole video. To silence only one part, use an editor and lower the volume at that point. If you only need a short silent clip, the video cutter cuts it and removes the audio in one step.
Does the muted video have a watermark?
No. The file comes out with no watermark, no sign-up and no usage limit, named after the original followed by muted. You can mute as many videos as you like.
