How to cut a video online without losing quality
Most editors export the video again after a cut: they decode every frame and compress it once more. That takes time and always costs some quality. This tool works differently: we copy the frames of the chosen range, exactly as they were recorded, into a new file. With no re-encoding, resolution, sharpness, color and audio stay identical to the original, and a clip several minutes long is ready in a few seconds.
The output format follows the input. MP4, M4V and MOV videos, like the ones from an iPhone or a camera, come out as MP4, which opens on any phone, editor and social network. WebM stays WebM. With MKV, the output depends on the codecs inside the file.
| Input video | Comes out as | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 (phone, camera, download) | MP4 | H.264, HEVC, VP9 or AV1 |
| MOV (iPhone, camera) | MP4 | H.264 or HEVC (H.265) |
| ProRes MOV | MOV | Stays ProRes, ready for your editor |
| M4V | MP4 | Files without copy protection |
| WebM | WebM | VP8, VP9 or AV1, with Opus or Vorbis |
| MKV | MP4 or WebM | Depends on the file's codecs |
Why does the cut start at the nearest keyframe?
Compressed video does not store every frame in full. Every so often there is a keyframe with the complete picture, and the frames after it only store what changed. A cut without re-encoding has to start on a keyframe, or the first seconds would show up gray or broken. That is why the start moves back to the nearest keyframe before the point you marked.
The tool shows that actual start before you cut, on the timeline and in text, and the final report lists the start, the end, the length and the file size. The end stays where you put it. On some phone videos it can run a few frames past, and the report shows the real end.
- Phone videos usually have a keyframe every 1 or 2 seconds, so the difference is small.
- Screen recordings, livestreams and videos downloaded from the web can space keyframes further apart, sometimes more than 5 seconds.
- Need to start on an exact frame? Mark a little earlier here and fine-tune in your editor, or cut in the editor directly.
How to cut a video in CapCut and Premiere Pro
In CapCut, import the video, move the playhead to the start of the part you want and tap Split; do the same at the end, delete the leftover pieces and export. In Premiere Pro, open the video in the Source Monitor, mark the In point with I and the Out point with O, and export with the Source In/Out range (Ctrl+M on Windows, Cmd+M on Mac).
Both cut on any frame, but both export again: the video is re-encoded, and the longer the clip, the longer the export. This tool does the opposite: no re-encoding and done in seconds, with the trade-off of starting on a keyframe. To pull a moment out of a sermon, a lecture or a livestream and send it to someone, that is usually all you need.
| Feature | This tool | CapCut | Premiere Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-encoding | No | Yes, on export | Yes, on export |
| Where the cut starts | Nearest keyframe | Any frame | Any frame |
| Export time | Seconds | Depends on clip and computer | Depends on clip and computer |
| Install | Nothing | App | App and subscription |
After the cut: Reels, Shorts, TikTok and WhatsApp
The clip keeps the aspect ratio of the original. A horizontal video stays horizontal: for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, which are vertical, you still need to reframe it and, ideally, add captions, since many people watch with the sound off. Before posting, check each platform's length limit and the safe zone, where the app's buttons do not cover faces or captions.
If you want several clips from one long video, like a church service, a podcast or a livestream, you can skip the search. Automatic captioned clips: we find the best moments for you. Upload the video or paste a YouTube link and get 4 to 60 clips scored from 0 to 100, already vertical and captioned, ready to review and download.

Frequently asked questions
How do I cut a video online for free?
Choose the video on this page, mark the start and end on the timeline and click cut video. The clip comes out as MP4 or WebM, without re-encoding, and you download it right away. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no usage cap.
Does cutting a video reduce its quality?
No. We copy the frames of the clip exactly as they are stored in the file, with no decoding and no second compression. Resolution, frame rate, color and audio match the original. That is also why the cut is fast, even with long videos and 4K footage.
Why did the cut start before the point I marked?
Because a cut without re-encoding has to start on a keyframe, the complete picture a video stores every so often. The start moves back to the nearest keyframe before your mark. The tool shows that actual start before you cut and again in the final report.
Which video formats can I cut?
MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV. MP4, M4V and MOV come out as MP4; WebM comes out as WebM; MKV comes out as MP4 or WebM, depending on its codecs. iPhone videos in HEVC work; if the preview does not open in your browser, you can still cut by typing the times.
Can I remove the sound from a video?
Yes. Check remove audio before you cut and the clip comes out with picture only, ready for a new soundtrack or a voiceover. If you want the opposite, just the audio, use the video to MP3 converter instead.
Does it work on a phone?
It works in current desktop and mobile browsers. On a phone, the timeline handles respond to touch, and the Start here and End here buttons mark the point where the video is paused. For long videos, a computer is usually more comfortable.
Does the cut video have a watermark?
No. The clip has no watermark, and there is no sign-up and no usage cap. Cut as many videos as you like and download each clip right away, named after the original file and the cut times.
