What is a jump cut?
A jump cut is a cut that skips forward within the same shot, without changing camera or angle. The person is in the same place, but a piece of the speech is gone and the image makes a small jump. It started as a bold move in film and became the language of vlogs, podcasts and social clips.

A line before and after jump cuts
The pauses and filler go, the idea stays. Every removed piece is a jump cut in the picture.
- Before: “So... yeah, like, what I wanted to say is, um, natural light changes everything.”
- Cuts: “So...”, “yeah, like,”, “um,” and a 1.2 s pause
- After: “What I wanted to say is natural light changes everything.”
Why jump cuts took over social video
They remove dead air. In a 30-second clip every pause weighs a lot, and the jump in the picture reads as pace, not as a mistake.
Used badly, they wear people out: a jump after every word makes speech sound robotic. The sweet spot is cutting long pauses and repetition while keeping natural breathing.
Jump cuts in FilmScribe
In clips, you remove pauses (light, balanced or strong) and filler words from an editable list before downloading, and each removal becomes a hard cut in the picture. You adjust it in the transcript text, word by word. In vertical podcast clips, the hard cut between speakers switches the frame from one person to the other.

- 01
Cut between words, not inside them
Place each cut just before the next word starts or on a breath, never mid-syllable. A clipped consonant at the join is what makes a jump cut sound like a mistake.
- 02
Smooth the audio at the join
Room tone and background noise can change abruptly at a cut. A short audio crossfade, a few frames long, hides the join without changing the picture.
- 03
Vary the pace
Cutting every pause to the same length makes speech sound mechanical. Leave a longer beat before a key line or a punchline, so the viewer has a moment to take it in.

Is a jump cut an editing mistake?
Classic film avoided it. Today it is a style choice, especially in vlogs and social video. It becomes a mistake when the jump distracts more than the speech that was removed.
How do I hide a jump cut?
Punch in slightly on the next shot, cover the cut with B-roll or switch to another camera. In social clips, many creators prefer to leave it visible.
What is the difference between a jump cut and a hard cut?
A hard cut is any direct switch between images, with no transition. A jump cut is a specific hard cut within the same shot that skips forward in time.
