What size should a video be for each platform?
Each place has a preferred shape. Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts are vertical, at 9:16. The Instagram feed takes up to 4:5 vertical, which fills more of the screen than a square. 1:1 works in feeds and ads. Regular YouTube and computer and TV screens are 16:9. The output sizes here follow the standard for each format.
If you need a format outside the list, like 3:4, 2:3 or a wide banner for a website, pick other size and type the width and height in pixels. Both sides become even numbers, which is what video encoders require.
| Format | Size | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 | Reels, TikTok, Shorts, Stories, Status |
| 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 | Instagram and Facebook feed |
| 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 | Feeds, ads, LinkedIn |
| 16:9 | 1920 x 1080 | YouTube, websites, slides, TV |
Crop or fit with bars: which one should you use?
Cropping fills the whole screen and cuts what does not fit. Going from 16:9 to 9:16, only a third of the width stays in the picture, so it works when the subject is in one place: a person talking, a product, a face. You decide which part stays by dragging the picture in the preview or moving the position slider. The crop is static: it stays in the same place from start to finish.
Fitting with bars shows the whole video and fills the empty space. Black bars are discreet; white ones suit light backgrounds; blurred ones use the picture itself, enlarged and softened, and look more natural on social media. Use it when nothing can be left out: two people side by side, slides, wide shots, text near the edges.
- Crop: full screen, one person or object at the center of the action.
- Blurred bars: the whole video, looking as if it was made for the format.
- Black or white bars: the whole video, a clean look, good for presentations.
Does resizing a video lose quality?
The video is created again in H.264, in an MP4 that opens on any phone, editor and platform, at a high bitrate for the size you pick. The loss from that new compression is small. What matters more is upscaling: cropping 9:16 out of a 1080p video leaves a 606 x 1080 pixel strip, which has to be enlarged to reach 1080 x 1920 and looks a little softer.
If the original is 4K, the same strip is 1214 x 2160 pixels, more than the 1080 x 1920 output, and the vertical video stays sharp. For a lighter file, pick the smaller size of each format. The audio is kept; untick the option if you want the video silent.
When a static crop is not enough
A static crop works when the person stays put in the frame. If they walk across a stage, if an interview has two people talking from opposite sides, or if the camera changes shots, a fixed window will cut someone out at some point. In those cases, fitting with blurred bars keeps the whole video.
For clips from long videos, we do the reframing: in the vertical video, the camera follows whoever is speaking and switches between people in a conversation, instead of sitting in the center. Before posting, also check each platform's safe zone, where the app's buttons do not cover faces or captions.
More than a video resizer. A frame that follows the speaker.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change a video's aspect ratio?
Choose the video on this page, click the format (9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9) and decide between cropping and fitting with bars. The preview shows the result right away. Then click resize and download the MP4.
How do I choose which part of the video stays in the crop?
Drag the picture in the preview, with the mouse or your finger, until the framing is right, or use the crop position slider. The center button puts it back in the middle. The position applies to the whole video, from start to finish.
Can I fit the whole video without cropping anything?
Yes. Choose fit with bars: the whole video shows and the leftover space is black, white or a blurred copy of the picture behind it. It is the best option for slides, wide shots and two people in the frame.
What size is a video for Reels and TikTok?
1080 x 1920 pixels, in 9:16. It is the first output size of the 9:16 format here. If you need a lighter file to send or test, 720 x 1280 keeps the same shape.
Does the resized video keep its audio?
Yes. The sound is kept and stays in sync with the picture, as AAC. If you want the video silent, untick keep the audio before creating it.
Does the video come out with a watermark?
No. The MP4 comes out with no watermark, no sign-up and no usage limit, named after the original file with the new size at the end.
