How to record a video while reading a teleprompter
The trick is to keep the text as close to the lens as you can. On a computer, open the teleprompter in a narrow window right under the webcam, or go full screen if the camera sits on top of the monitor. When filming with a phone, record with one device and prop the teleprompter right under the camera, at eye level.
The farther you sit from the screen, the less it looks like you are reading. Keep the text large and the column narrow (60% to 80% of the width), and do a rehearsal before recording to find the right speed.
- Webcam or camera: keep the reading band just below the lens.
- Phone: turn it sideways to fit more words on each line.
- Rehearsal: read the script aloud once with the teleprompter scrolling.
- Pauses: a blank line in the script becomes a natural breath.
What is the right teleprompter speed?
For most people, 130 to 150 words per minute. That is the pace of a clear, unhurried conversation. Beginners tend to feel better near 120; seasoned presenters and short videos go past 160. Here speed is set in words per minute rather than an abstract number, so you see the estimated video length before you record.
While reading, use the up and down arrows to speed up or slow down by 10 words per minute. The teleprompter keeps your place in the text and only changes the pace.
| Speed | When to use it | 300-word script |
|---|---|---|
| 120 wpm | First recording, technical copy | 2:30 |
| 130 wpm | Sermon, class, testimonial | 2:18 |
| 150 wpm | YouTube video, presentation | 2:00 |
| 160 wpm | Podcast, lively conversation | 1:53 |
| 180 wpm | Short video, ad | 1:40 |
What is teleprompter mirror mode for?
Studio teleprompters use a slanted piece of glass in front of the camera. The screen lies flat under the glass, the glass reflects the text toward the speaker, and the camera films through it. Like any reflection, the text comes out reversed, so the image has to be mirrored at the source.
Turn on mirror mode when your tablet or phone sits inside a teleprompter rig with glass. If you read straight from the computer or phone screen, leave it off.
How to write a script that reads well on a teleprompter
Write the way you speak. Short sentences, one idea per sentence and small paragraphs, with a blank line between them to breathe. Write numbers and acronyms the way you say them, and swap hard-to-pronounce words before the recording, not during it.
After recording, bring the video into the editor you already use, such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro or CapCut. To skip the tedious part, send the recording to us: we transcribe the speech, suggest the best vertical clips with animated captions, and you can download the captions as SRT to import into your editor.
- Keep sentences to 12 to 20 words at most.
- Mark pauses with a blank line.
- Spell out numbers when you say them differently from how they are written.
- Read it aloud once beforehand and cut whatever trips you up.
More than a teleprompter. What happens after you record.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use the online teleprompter?
Paste your script into the text box, choose the speed in words per minute and the text size, and press start. After the 3 second countdown the text scrolls on its own; read the line crossing the reading band. Space pauses, the arrow keys change the speed and full screen leaves only the text.
Can I use the teleprompter on my phone?
Yes. Open this page on your phone or tablet, paste your script and press start. A tap on the text pauses and resumes, and dragging moves the text back or forward. Turn the screen sideways to fit more words per line. On devices that allow it, the screen stays on while the text scrolls.
What speed should a teleprompter be?
Somewhere between 130 and 150 words per minute works for most recordings. Start at 130 for the first rehearsal and adjust with the arrow keys as you read. Sermons and classes call for a little less; short videos and ads, a little more. The estimated length updates with the speed.
How do I mirror the teleprompter text?
Check the mirror option. The image flips horizontally, like a mirror, so the reflection on the teleprompter glass reads correctly. Only use it with a teleprompter rig that has glass; when reading straight from the screen, leave it off.
What are the teleprompter keyboard shortcuts?
Space starts and pauses, the up arrow speeds up, the down arrow slows down and Home jumps back to the start. The mouse wheel moves your place in the text at any time, and Esc leaves full screen. On phones and tablets, a tap pauses and dragging moves the text.
Is the online teleprompter free?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up, no time limit and no watermark, because it does not record anything: you record with your own camera or phone. Your last script and settings are kept for the next time you open the page.
