How to turn OGG or OPUS into MP3

  1. 01

    Pick the .ogg or .opus

Drag the voice note you saved from WhatsApp or Telegram into the dashed box, or tap to choose the file.

  2. 02

Go with mono and 48 kHz

Voice notes are recorded with a single mic at 48 kHz. Mono avoids sound in one ear only on headphones, and the original rate avoids a needless conversion.

  3. 03

    Download the MP3

The button shows the progress. When it is done, download the .mp3, named after the original file.

Where OGG and OPUS files come from

Almost always, from voice messages. On Android, WhatsApp stores each voice note as an .opus file in the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder. On WhatsApp Web and the desktop app, the same note downloads as .ogg. Telegram records voice messages as OGG too. Inside, they are the same thing: sound compressed with Opus, a codec built for speech, packed in an Ogg container.

There is also OGG with Vorbis audio, more common in games, Linux apps and some recorders. This page takes both kinds, plus the .oga extension, which is just another name for an audio-only OGG.

Why is the MP3 bigger than the WhatsApp audio?

Because voice notes are heavily compressed. WhatsApp's Opus audio runs at roughly 16 to 32 kbps, enough to understand speech and send it fast over mobile data. The MP3 we write is a constant 192 kbps, so one minute grows from about 180 KB to about 1.4 MB. Picking mono does not shrink it: the MP3 stays at 192 kbps.

Bigger does not mean better sound. The conversion copies what the file holds, with a small loss from re-encoding one compressed format into another. What you gain is compatibility: an MP3 opens in old players, car stereos, help desk systems, video editors and upload forms that reject OGG.

The OGG file won't open: what to do

The browser is what reads the audio, and support for Opus and Vorbis varies from one to another. Current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox open OGG and OPUS normally. If a message says the Opus audio could not be read, open this page in Chrome or Edge on a computer and try again.

On a phone, the step that usually gets stuck is saving the file: the voice note stays inside the chat until you share or download it. On WhatsApp Web, the message menu downloads the .ogg straight to your computer's downloads folder, which is the easiest way to convert several notes in a row.

  • Codec error: open the page in an up-to-date Chrome or Edge.
  • File shows 0 KB: the download didn't finish, download the note again.
  • Several notes: convert one at a time, with no usage limit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert OGG to MP3 for free?

Pick the .ogg or .opus file on this page, leave the format on MP3 and click convert. The MP3 comes out at 192 kbps, named after the original. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no usage limit.

Are OPUS and OGG the same thing?

Nearly. Opus is how the sound is compressed; Ogg is the container that holds it. An .opus file is an Ogg with Opus audio, and the .ogg from WhatsApp Web has the same content under another extension. This page converts both to MP3.

Why is the MP3 so much bigger than the original?

WhatsApp records voice notes at 16 to 32 kbps, and the MP3 comes out at a constant 192 kbps. One minute grows from about 180 KB to about 1.4 MB. The sound gets neither worse nor better; the file is simply in a format that plays everywhere.

Mono or stereo for a WhatsApp voice note?

Mono. A voice note is recorded with a single mic, so stereo would only copy the same sound to both sides. The MP3 size is the same either way, because the bitrate stays at 192 kbps.

The audio didn't open. What could it be?

Most of the time the browser can't read Opus audio or the file didn't finish downloading. Open the page in an up-to-date Chrome or Edge on a computer and check that the file is larger than 0 KB. Downloading from WhatsApp Web usually fixes it.

Can I turn a WhatsApp voice note into text?

Yes, with no conversion first. Upload the .ogg or .opus to FilmScribe and we transcribe it word by word, with a timestamp on each passage. You review it while listening and download TXT, PDF or SRT.
