WEBM to MP3 the audio of your recording, in a format that opens anywhere.
To convert WEBM to MP3, pick the .webm file, leave the format on MP3 and download the audio. It lets you use the sound of a screen recording or a web recording in apps that won't open WEBM. The MP3 comes out at a constant 192 kbps. Free, no sign-up and no watermark.

How to turn WEBM into MP3
- 01
Pick the .webm
Drag the recording into the dashed box or tap to choose it. WEBM with video or audio only both work.
- 02
Check the channels
Screen recordings with a mic are often mono inside. If the sound plays in one ear only on headphones, choose mono.
- 03
Download the MP3
The button shows the percentage and time left. When it is done, download the .mp3, named after the recording.
Where a WEBM file comes from
WEBM is the format browsers record in. Screen recording extensions and sites, web tools for recording lessons or testimonials, and pages that record your voice almost always hand you a .webm, because Chrome and Firefox record in that format. OBS can also save as WEBM, and some sites offer videos to download that way.
Inside, the video is VP8, VP9 or AV1, and the audio is almost always Opus, sometimes Vorbis. For the MP3 only the audio matters: the video codec changes nothing in the conversion, and an audio-only WEBM works the same way.
| Source | What's inside |
|---|---|
| Screen recording extension | VP8 or VP9 video, Opus audio |
| Site that records your voice | Audio only, Opus |
| OBS set to WEBM | VP9 or AV1 video, Opus audio |
| Video downloaded from some sites | VP9 video, Opus or Vorbis audio |
Why so many apps won't open WEBM
WEBM was made for the web, and outside it support is patchy. Several video editors won't import WEBM without a plugin, the Mac's default player won't open it, and many file upload systems only take MP3, M4A or WAV. When what matters is the speech, converting the audio to MP3 solves it without touching the video.
The MP3 is also much smaller than the full recording, because it leaves the picture behind. A 30-minute 1080p screen recording is often a few hundred MB; its MP3 is about 43 MB.
| Length | 192 kbps MP3 |
|---|---|
| 5 minutes | 7.2 MB |
| 15 minutes | 22 MB |
| 30 minutes | 43 MB |
| 1 hour | 86 MB |
Common problems with WEBM recordings
The most common one is a recording with no sound. Screen recorders only capture audio when the mic or the tab audio was allowed when recording started; if it wasn't, the file has no audio track and we tell you so. Another frequent case: a WEBM recorded on the web sometimes doesn't store its length, so the player shows the wrong time or none. The MP3 has a constant bitrate, so its length and seek bar work in any player.
Opus audio opens in current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox. If a message says the audio could not be read, open this page in Chrome or Edge on a computer and try again.
- No audio track: the sound wasn't allowed during recording.
- Wrong length in the player: the MP3 comes out with the right time.
- Codec error: open the page in an up-to-date Chrome or Edge.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert WEBM to MP3 for free?
Pick the .webm file on this page, leave the format on MP3 and click convert. The MP3 comes out at 192 kbps, named after the recording. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no usage limit.
Does it work with audio-only WEBM?
Yes. Many sites that record your voice save a .webm with no video, only Opus audio. The conversion is the same: pick the file, leave it on MP3 and download.
I converted a screen recording and it says there is no audio. Why?
The recording was probably made without the mic and without the tab audio. In that case the WEBM has no audio track, so there is nothing to convert. Next time, allow the mic or tick the option to share audio.
Why does the player show the wrong length for my WEBM?
Many recordings made on the web don't store their length in the file, so the player guesses or shows zero. The MP3 we hand you has a constant 192 kbps bitrate, and its length shows correctly in any player.
The WEBM didn't open. What should I do?
The audio in almost every WEBM is Opus, which opens in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox. If you see a codec message, open the page in Chrome or Edge on a computer. Also check that the recording finished saving before you closed the recorder.
Can I transcribe the recording instead of converting it?
Yes, with no conversion first. Upload the .webm to FilmScribe and we transcribe it word by word, with speakers and timestamps. You download TXT, PDF or SRT, or just the passages as MP3.
Recorded a lesson or meeting as WEBM? We turn it into text.
Upload the .webm as it came out of the recorder. We transcribe it with speakers and timestamps, and you download TXT, PDF or SRT, or an MP3 of just the lines that matter.
