How to translate Portuguese subtitles to English
- 01
Upload the Portuguese video
A video or audio file, or a YouTube link, live streams included. We detect Portuguese on our own and transcribe it with the timing of every word.
- 02
Pick English
Choose English in the language selector and translate the captions, the content or both. Close the window if you like: we'll email you when it's done.
- 03
Download or burn it in
Download the English SRT or FCPXML or, for video, render a clip with translated captions in one of 235 styles.
English subtitles that keep the Portuguese timing
We translate the Portuguese captions after they are already in sync with the speech. Every English cue comes in and goes out at the same point as the original, so nobody has to slide captions around on the timeline afterwards.
The SRT comes with TV, Netflix and YouTube presets and your project's frame rate. If you cut in Final Cut, download FCPXML instead. On YouTube, upload the SRT as an English caption track next to the Portuguese one.
Who translates Portuguese subtitles to English
Most of it is Brazilian or Portuguese content heading to an English-speaking audience. A church in Brazil sends Sunday's message with English captions to a partner church in the United States. A documentary team submits a Portuguese interview with English subtitles to a festival. A company shares an all-hands recorded in São Paulo with its head office abroad.
It also works the other way around: if you received a Portuguese recording and need to understand it, the English transcript tells you who said what and when. For a YouTube video, paste the link instead of downloading the file.
- A Brazilian sermon for a partner church abroad
- A course from Brazil opened to international students
- A Portuguese interview or documentary for a festival or client
- A company presentation for a head office or investors
- Clips from a Brazilian channel with English captions for Reels
Before you publish: names, terms and reading speed
Fix names, acronyms and industry terms in the Portuguese transcript before translating, because the fix carries into the translation. For a sermon, check biblical names and quotes; for a course, the technical terms students will search for later.
As a rough rule of thumb, English takes 15% to 25% fewer characters than Portuguese, so translated captions tend to get shorter and easier to read. It's still worth running the SRT through our free reading speed checker: the usual TV and streaming reference for adult viewers is 17 to 20 characters per second.

More than captions: the whole transcript in English
Beyond the captions, we translate the full transcript, the chapter titles and the hooks, with the same speakers and timestamps as the original. Switch languages in the selector and read the whole Portuguese recording in English, every line where it belongs.
For video, English captions can also be burned into a vertical clip in any of the 235 styles. Each translation is saved with the file, and you can delete and redo it whenever you want.
More than translated subtitles. Portuguese content, ready for a wider audience.

Frequently asked questions
How do I translate Portuguese subtitles to English?
Upload the video or paste a YouTube link, let the Portuguese transcript finish and choose English in the language selector. We translate the captions with the timing of every cue unchanged, and you download the SRT, the FCPXML or a clip with English captions.
Can I translate a Portuguese SRT file I already have?
Not directly. Translation starts from the video or audio, not a standalone SRT: upload the recording, we finish the transcript and you pick the language. That way the translated captions keep the original timing. If you only need to change the SRT's format, use our free subtitle converter.
Does it work with European Portuguese recordings?
Yes. The source is whatever language your recording is in, and we transcribe 90+ languages with automatic detection, so a recording from Lisbon goes through the same way as one from São Paulo. The English captions come from that transcript.
Do the English subtitles stay in sync?
Yes. Every English cue comes in and goes out at the same time as the Portuguese cue, because we translate captions that are already in sync. There's nothing to adjust on the timeline.
Can one video have English and Spanish subtitles?
Yes. One file holds several translations at once, across 9 languages. Translate into English and Spanish and download one SRT per language.
Is the English translation free?
It's on Studio and Agency, and on the trial of those plans, which lasts 3 days or 1 hour of media. Pro transcribes but doesn't translate. The trial starts with a card on file; cancel in the app before it ends and you pay nothing.
