SRT vs. ASS: what's the difference?
SRT keeps only the essentials: a number, a time range and the text, with italics, bold and color as simple tags. ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is a styled subtitle format: it defines the font, size, fill and outline colors, shadow, margins and alignment, and also supports exact positioning, fades, rotation and syllable-by-syllable karaoke.
That's why ASS is the go-to format for anime subtitling, for stylized captions and for anyone who wants subtitles to look the same in every player. The file has three parts: [Script Info] with the reference resolution, [V4+ Styles] with the styles and [Events] with one Dialogue line per subtitle.

The words and the order of the lines stay the same. What changes is how things are written: ASS stores time in hundredths of a second, so 00:00:01,234 becomes 0:00:01.23. That's a difference of a few milliseconds, less than one video frame.
SRT italics, bold and underline become ASS override tags such as {\i1} and {\i0}. The <font color> tag is dropped, since color now comes from the style you picked. If the SRT uses {\an8} to move a line to the top, it stays, because that tag is native ASS.
| In the SRT | In the ASS |
|---|---|
| 00:00:01,234 | 0:00:01.23 (hundredths) |
| <i>text</i> | {\i1}text{\i0} |
| <b> and <u> | {\b1} and {\u1} |
| <font color> | Dropped, color comes from the style |
| {\an8} | Kept |
| Line break | \N |
| No style | Default style with font, color and outline |
Font size and PlayRes: how the style works
ASS measures everything against the file's reference resolution, PlayResX and PlayResY. At 1920x1080, a size of 64 takes up the same share of the screen on a Full HD or a 4K video, because the player scales it. In other words, font size isn't in your video's pixels, it's on that grid.
Pick 1080x1920 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts: the subtitles stay proportional to the vertical frame and the margins keep the text off the edges. Bottom or top sets the alignment of the Default style, which already has a black outline and a shadow so it reads over any image.
Want more control? Open the .ass in Aegisub, go to the Styles Manager and adjust colors and margins, or add a second style for signs and credits. The file is laid out for exactly that.
Where to use an ASS file
ASS shines outside the video editor. The most common destinations:
- Aegisub: fine timing, per-character styles, positioned signs and karaoke.
- VLC, mpv and MPC-HC: play the ASS with the font, color and position you set, as long as the font is installed.
- Burned-in subtitles: encoders that accept ASS, such as HandBrake, render the subtitles into the picture with the same look.
- Fansubs and anime: it's the working format of subtitling teams.
- Video editors: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro generally don't import ASS styling. For them, stick with SRT.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert SRT to ASS?
Paste the SRT or drop the file in, choose ASS as the output, set the font, size, color, position and frame, and click convert. We write the [Script Info], the Default style and one Dialogue line per subtitle. The file comes out as UTF-8, ready for Aegisub and media players.
What's the difference between ASS and SSA?
SSA (SubStation Alpha v4) is the original format. ASS (v4.00+) is its successor, with more style fields, underline, strikeout and layers. Nearly every tool uses ASS today. We write ASS v4.00+ and read both formats as input.
Will my subtitles lose the colors they had in the SRT?
They lose colors set with <font color>, because in ASS color comes from the style. Pick the text color in the converter and it applies to every line. For different colors per character or per line, add extra styles in Aegisub after converting.
Why do the times only have two digits after the dot?
ASS stores time in hundredths of a second. We round the SRT milliseconds, so 00:00:01,234 becomes 0:00:01.23. The largest difference is 5 milliseconds, less than one frame at any common frame rate, and it never shows on screen.
What font size should I use in ASS?
In a 1920x1080 frame, sizes between 54 and 72 read well full screen. In the vertical 1080x1920 frame, the same size fills more of the width, so try something a bit smaller. Because ASS scales by PlayRes, the result looks the same in Full HD and 4K.
Can Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve open ASS files?
Generally not with the styling. Video editors read SRT and apply their own look. Use ASS in players, in Aegisub or to burn in subtitles with an encoder. For your editor, stay with SRT or use the SRT to Premiere and SRT to DaVinci Resolve tools.
Can I convert ASS back to SRT?
Yes. Paste the .ass or .ssa file and choose SRT. We read the Dialogue lines in [Events], keep italics, bold and underline, and drop positioning, fades, colors and karaoke, which SRT can't hold. Comment lines are ignored.
