VTT to SRT converter web captions in the format your editor opens.

To convert VTT to SRT, paste the captions or drop in the .vtt file and download the .srt. We number every cue, swap the millisecond period for a comma and drop what SRT cannot hold, like positioning and styles. Timing stays exactly the same, and the file comes back as UTF-8, ready for Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

When a VTT file needs to become SRT

WebVTT is the caption format of the web, and it is how a lot of captions reach you: the transcript of a meeting recorded in Zoom or Teams, captions downloaded from Vimeo or a course platform, the file a vendor delivered for your website. The trouble starts when you try to edit.

Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro all import SRT without fuss, and SRT is what TVs, USB drives and players like VLC read most reliably. Converting VTT to SRT is the shortest path to getting those captions onto a timeline or into the living room.

What SRT leaves behind from VTT

SRT is simple: a number, a time and text. Everything VTT adds on top of that stays behind. Cue settings at the end of the timing line (line, position, align) disappear, and captions go back to the player's default spot, bottom center. STYLE and REGION blocks and NOTE comments are dropped too.

The voice tag <v Name> is removed along with the name, so if you need to know who is speaking, check before you convert. Color classes like <c.yellow> and per-word timestamps inside the text are removed as well, but the words stay. Italics, bold and underline survive, since SRT uses the same tags.

How to import the SRT into your editor

In Premiere Pro, import the .srt like any media file and drag it into your sequence: it becomes a caption track you can style in the Essential Graphics or Properties panel. In DaVinci Resolve, import it into the Media Pool and drag it onto the timeline to get a subtitle track. In Final Cut Pro, use File, Import, Captions.

If the VTT had lines too long for the screen, the report shows which cues go over 42 characters per line or 17 characters per second. To make the SRT even safer in your editor, follow up with the SRT to Premiere and subtitle sync tools.

 • Premiere Pro: File, Import, pick the .srt and drag it into the sequence
 • DaVinci Resolve: Media Pool, Import Subtitle, drag onto the timeline
 • Final Cut Pro: File, Import, Captions

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert VTT to SRT without breaking the timing?

Paste or drop the VTT and download the SRT. Every cue keeps its exact start and end, down to the millisecond; only the period becomes a comma, and hours are always written out, as in 00:00:03,200. Nothing is recalculated or shifted.

Will a Zoom or Teams VTT transcript work?

Yes. Those files put the speaker's name inside a <v> tag, and SRT has no place for it, so the name is removed and only the spoken line stays. If you need to tell people apart, note the names first or use a transcript that already labels speakers.

Why did my captions move after converting?

VTT stores placement at the end of the timing line, with settings like line:10% or align:start. SRT has no such feature, so captions return to the player's default spot at the bottom center. If you need one at the top, reposition it in your video editor.

Can Premiere Pro open a VTT file?

The reliable route is SRT, which Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro import directly as a caption track. That is why it pays to convert the VTT before it goes to the timeline. The SRT we hand back is numbered, UTF-8 and free of web markup.

Will auto-generated captions downloaded as VTT become a clean SRT?

The per-word timestamps and color classes those captions carry are removed, and the text stays. Some auto captions repeat the previous line to fake a scrolling effect; that repetition carries over to the SRT. Check the report and turn on the overlap fix if cues collide.

Will accented characters survive the conversion?

Yes. We detect the file's encoding (UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252) and always write the SRT in UTF-8, which editors and players read without turning é into garbage. Entities like & are turned back into the plain character too.

Want captions straight from the video? We transcribe and caption it.
